Chapter Eight

Renee and Charlie wrapped their arms around Bella as she broke into sobs.

“Dr. Whitlock, I am Edward’s father. What is  Edward's prognosis?”

“Dr. Cullen, I am pleased to finally meet you, but sorry it is under these circumstances. Edward has often spoken of you and the entire family. To be honest, we need to wait and see, as you know, the next forty-eight hours will be the deciding factor.”

“Can I see him?”  Bella cried.

“Yes, but only two at a time.”

Bella reached out to Esme and they followed Dr. Whitlock back. When they walked into the room, both of them gasped. Edward's face had cuts and bruises, there were tubes, wires, and he was on a ventilator.

Bella walked over to the bed and took his hand in hers.

“Edward, I am here. Please, baby, come back to me.”  Bella cried.

Esme found a chair and put it beside the bed so Bella could sit. She was frightened for her son, but also for Bella. They were connected by some unexplainable bond and she didn’t know how Bella would survive without Edward.

Esme spoke to Edward and begged him to fight. Giving him a kiss on the cheek that was not hurt; she left to allow someone else to come in. One by one, the family came in, but Bella remained holding to his hand and softly crying.

Carlisle and Charlie arranged with Dr. Whitlock and the head of the hospital for Bella to remain in the room.

Once everyone was gone and the nurses and Doctor Whitlock came in to check Edward over and administer his medicine, Bella picked up her binder.

“I never told you how much I loved reading your letters that you wrote to me. I kept every one of them and many times over the years, I have reread them. Edward, I need you to fight for us, I need you to keep the promises that you made me in these letters.”  Bella pleaded. Flipping to the first page, she began to read the letters to him and added what she felt when she first read it.

The night turned into day and Bella continued to read to Edward. Dr. Whitlock came in and ordered a new brain scan. Bella had to leave the room for the scan and Renee and Esme made her sit down, eat, and drink. They had gone to their house and packed Bella a bag of clean clothes. Carlisle had arranged for her to be able to take a shower and as soon as she was cleaned and doning fresh clothes she was back at the door.

Dr. Whitlock said there was still some swelling, but it had come down some. Bella went back to the chair and began to read the letters. By the end of the day, she could barely talk, but she continued. She had gotten to the letter that he had written to her the day that they had made love for the first time.

“Edward, I remember that night as if it was yesterday. Every touch, every kiss was magical. Come back to me, please, I can’t go on without you.”  She cried.

She laid her head on the bed and quickly fell asleep.

She dreamed that she was stepping out of Cinderella's pumpkin carriage into Charlie’s waiting arms. She was wearing a beautiful, white ball gown and on her feet was crystal slippers. She took Charlie’s arm and began walking toward Edward with his bright green eyes, shining brightly in the midday sun, a giant smile on his lovely face. In the background Train was singing “Marry Me.”  When she got to him, a minister began the service and when it came time to say their vows, Edward pulled out a letter and began to read to her.

“My Dearest Love,

You are the love of my life. I cannot imagine a day without you in it. I promise to take care of you, love you, and keep us true from this day until my last breath here on earth. And when we are no longer living, I know that we will be together looking after our children and our children’s children.”

Bella gasped at the beautiful words and then the minister pronounced them man and wife as Edward leaned in to place the kiss, he disappeared and she was left with someone stroking her hair. Opening her eyes, she looked up to see Edward looking back at her.

“Edward, oh, Edward, you’re awake,”  Bella screamed.

Edward didn’t know what happened, but when he opened his eyes, he knew he was in a hospital room and bed. Reaching up he felt the breathing tube and knew that he had been in bad shape to have been intubated.

Bella had pushed the nurse’s button and the nurse and Dr. Whitlock rushed into the room to find Edward awake. Dr. Whitlock checked his vitals and determined that the breathing tube was not needed. He carefully removed the tube and Edward took his first breath on his own, causing him to cough roughly. Bella picked up a glass of water and straw and helped Edward drink.

“Thank you.”  Edward squeaked.

“Don’t talk, relax that voice,”  Bella said.

Dr. Whitlock explained to Edward what had happened and how he felt sure he would make a complete recovery. They allowed all the family to come in and see Edward. Each one was excited to see him awake and talking. The nurses came in and got him ready to be moved from the ICU to a regular room. Later in the day, everyone left to get some rest and Bella and Edward were left alone.

Out of Edward’s room window the sun was setting. The bright orange glow bounced around the room.

“Climb in here,”  Edward said, holding up the blanket.

“No, I am fine.”

“I need you beside me, please baby,”  Edward begged.

Bella slipped off her shoes and climbed in beside him.

“I was so scared that I was going to lose you,”  Bella said, looking in Edward’s eyes.

“I don’t remember the accident, but I heard you reading my letters. I didn’t know you kept all of them.”

“They are my cherished possession.”

“Right before I woke, I was dreaming of us at Disney,”  Edward said.

“Me too.”

“Bella this is not how I wanted this to happen, but I have to ask you. Will you marry me?”

Bella gasped and tears rolled down her cheek. She had waited so long to hear those four words. Placing her hand over his heart, she could feel it pounding in his chest. “I would be honored to be your wife. I can’t wait to marry you.”

Edward pulled her in and placed a passionate kiss on her lips. “I love you.”

“P.S. I love you too,” Bella replied.

Their past, present, and future was all there in the Letters of Love.
